The commission was the outcome of a competition-winning design in 2005 by Copeland Associates.

The concept took five years in its gestation and in obtaining numerous legislative approvals -  which included an Act of Parliament.

The project emerged from a partnership between Next Generation Clubs and Tennis Auckland, with the aim to create a world-class facility.

Stage 1 – Next Generation Auckland Domain was completed in 2011.

The second stage of the project is to complete the spectator concourse and amenities around the Centre, with an innovative tension membrane structural dome over Court no.1 that incorporates a sliding roof.
